Thomas H. Bredt
Board of Directors
Thomas Bredt joined Menlo Ventures in 1986. Previously, he was Senior Vice President and Director of the Information Systems Group at Dataquest Incorporated. Prior to Dataquest, Bredt worked for the Hewlett-Packard Company as an engineering manager in the computer systems, manufacturing applications and data communications groups. He also worked for Bell Laboratories and was a member of the Electrical Engineering faculty at Stanford University. At Menlo, Bredt focuses on early-stage communications, Internet, and software companies. His recent investments and board seats include: Apexon, Big Bear Networks, Caw Networks, Cielo Communications, ePeople, NUASIS and Teradiant Networks. His prior investments and board seats include: Aspect Communications (ASPT); Clarify, acquired by Nortel (NT); Latitude Communications (LATD); Priority Call, Inc., acquired by LHS Group; Red Brick, acquired by Informix (IFMX); Rubric, acquired by Broadbase (BBSW); Synoptics Communications, that merged with Wellfleet to form Bay Networks, which was acquired by Nortel (NT); and Xros, acquired by Nortel (NT).
Bredt is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.S. in Science Engineering), New York University (M.E.E. in Electrical Engineering), and Stanford University (Ph.D. in Computer Science).
Cecilia Claudio

Cecilia Claudio has spent the last 12 years as CIO at leading organizations and has established a proven track record of transforming IT to become a valued partner to business users. Most recently she was CIO of Mercury Interactive. Previously Claudio held the CIO position at Zurich Financial Services, Anthem Inc, and Xerox. She currently serves as a member of the board of directors at Sybase and DiVitas, and previously was on the board of directors at Farmers Group, Inc. She has served on CIO Advisory boards for Cisco, IBM, Siebel, Syndera and Tablus.
She was recognized by Computerworld as one of the Premier 100 IT executives worldwide in 2001, and has been recognized as one of the Top 100 Women in Computing in the US by McGraw Hill.
Rodrigo Fernando Flores

As founder and chief technology officer, Rodrigo Fernando Flores brings 14 years of experience in software and product development to newScale. Prior to founding the company, he created and released more than 20 software products that are used today by millions of enterprise users. Previously, Flores led the development and market launch of Action Technologies' Metro products. Metro is in use at more than 100 Global 2000 corporations, and the winner of multiple product awards. He also served as vice president of product management and as director of marketing at Action Technologies. Flores holds three patents on workflow technology, co-founded the Workflow Management Coalition and was its first vice chairman.
Flores received a bachelor's degree in management from St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif.
Scott Hammond

In his role as President and CEO, Scott Hammond brings seventeen years of industry experience to the company. Prior to newScale, Hammond was the founder, President and CEO of Digital Market, Inc. (DMI), the leading provider of Web-based sourcing and procurement solutions for direct materials. Hammond founded the company in 1995 by building the world's first Web-based trading exchange conducting over $1B worth of transactions between more than 1000 trading partners. He then productized the technology as an enterprise software solution for private exchanges targeted at Fortune 1000 manufacturing companies. In November of 1999, DMI merged with Agile Software (NASD:AGIL). Hammond then became a corporate officer and VP of e-Services and e-Procurement at Agile Software and was responsible for all direct materials sourcing and procurement solutions. While at Agile, he designed a next generation trading exchange for the electronics industry with Dell Computer, Cisco, Intel, Accel Partners and Gen3 Partners.
Hammond also pioneered yet another successful start-up, EcoSystems Software, where as a co-founder, he was instrumental in pioneering an integrated systems management software solution for open systems computing. In 1993, EcoSystems was acquired by Compuware Corporation (NASD:CPWR). His prior experience also includes industry leaders such as Xerox, Hewlett Packard, and Oracle Corporation.
As a well-respected industry speaker, Hammond has been invited to speak at such venues as VentureWire's Enterprise Outlook 2003, Morgan Stanley's 1999 Internet Commerce Symposium, Giga's Business Online97 Symposium, Giga's Business Online98 Symposium, International Oracle User's Week Conference (twice), UNIX Expo, the East Coast Oracle User's Group Conference and The 1998 Stanford Supply Chain Forum. Mr. Hammond was one of only 32 Industry CEOs selected to speak at the Spring 1999 Gartner Group IT Symposium/Dataquest Predicts event. Hammond was also chosen as one of "The Hot 25" top electronics industry executives by Electronic Buyers' News in 1996.
Hammond holds an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business.
Sy Kaufman founded Crosslink Capital and is semi-retired. He is involved in venture capital activities primarily in the software and services sector. Kaufman founded the Omega Venture family of funds in 1989 and has over 30 years of venture and public market investment experience. During the course of his career, he has invested in over 350 venture-backed companies. Prior to founding Crosslink, Kaufman ran investment banking for Robertson Stephens and co-directed its equity research department. He also spent 8 years at Hambrecht & Quist as an equity analyst and general partner covering the technology, data communications and semiconductor industries.
Kaufman has a BEE in Electrical Engineering from City University of New York, an MS in Electrical Engineering from San Jose State University, and an MBA from the University of Santa Clara. He sits on the boards of several venture-backed companies as well as the RAND Graduate School Board of Governors.
Perry joined NEA in October 1995 and became a general partner in June 1996. He focuses on information technology investments. His current portfolio responsibilities include:, BizFinity, CGtime, Cogit.com, Comstellar Technologies, Convene.com, Demandline.com, iManage, Magma Design Automation, newScale, Inc., ReShape, Siros Technologies, TestMart and TiVo. Previous board memberships include: Exabyte Corporation, Growth Networks (acquired by Cisco Systems), Hyperion Solutions, Silicon Graphics, Inc., Silicon Spice (acquired by Broadcom), Trading Dynamics (acquired by Ariba) and WarpSpeed Commuications (acquired by Enron). From May 1994 to December 1995, Perry served as President and Chief Executive Officer and then as Chairman of Viewstar Corporation. From 1985 to 1994, he was an executive with Silicon Graphics, Inc., Vice Chairman (1992-1993) responsible for worldwide field operations, Executive Vice President (1989-1991) responsible for the product division, and Vice President of Finance and Administration and Chief Financial Officer (1985-1986). Prior to this, Perry was Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Sonoma Vineyards and a partner at Arthur Young & Company. He is a Certified Public Accountant.
Perry received a Masters in Business Administration (with distinction) from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics (cum laude) from Amherst College.
George T. Shaheen

George T. Shaheen has a proven track record of helping technology leaders create new markets and drive accelerated growth. Most recently, Shaheen was the CEO of Siebel Systems until its acquisition by Oracle Corporation. Mr. Shaheen also serves on the boards of other successful organizations that have pioneered new market categories including Network Appliance, think3, and 24/7 Customer. During the 10 years he was Chief Executive Officer and Global Managing Partner of Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), annual revenue of the global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing firm increased nine-fold to nearly $10 billion. As a board member at Siebel Systems, he helped guide the creation of the CRM market and build the fastest-growing software company of its time.
He is a member of the Advisory Board of the Marcus & Millichap Company, served as an IT Governor of the World Economic Forum, and is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Northwestern University Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mr. Shaheen is a graduate of Bradley University, where he has served on the Board of Trustees.
Michael A. Error (Mike)

Michael A. Error is Vice President, Data Center Services at Cardinal Health. Prior to Cardinal Health, Error was Vice President of IT Infrastructure at AT&T Wireless. In his position as VP, he was responsible for all LAN, WAN, Voice, Data, Datacenter Operations, Helpdesk, and Desktop support relating to Information Technology. His organization of 1,200 employees supported over 30,000 company wide employees in 1,400 various locations across the United States. Error's professional career at AT&T Wireless, formerly McCaw Cellular, spanned over 13 years as he worked in many different Information Technology positions. His varied experiences in the Information Technology profession have given him the understanding necessary to provide guidance to his customers relating to the scalability issues of their Infrastructure related products and services.
Error's background includes other Information Technology roles in the Insurance as well as Lumber Industries. He has a bachelors of Science degree from the California University of Pennsylvania.
Alan Etterman (Al)

As Senior Vice President of Corporate Infrastructure at Openwave Systems Inc., Alan Etterman is in charge of the information technology and facilities teams at Openwave. His responsibilities include managing the day-to-day facilities operations and the information technology infrastructure of Openwave to ensure the company's best practices with IT.
Etterman brings 25 years of IT leadership to Openwave. Most recently he worked with Openwave in various capacities including developing business strategy and working with the IT department. Prior to Openwave, Etterman spent eight years as senior director of Global Communications and Technology at Cisco Systems, Inc. He has also held IT leadership positions at IBM, 3COM and GTE.
Brenda J. Fox

With more than 20 years experience in the world of high growth technology start-ups, Brenda J. Fox has been an integral part of the management teams that created three high-tech startup enterprises. Currently, Fox is the founder of Global Connexus where she is involved in such projects as CEO coach to CEO's of Finnish startup companies launching their business in North America. Prior to Global Connexus, she was the Vice President of Client Services and Product Devleopment at AristaSoft, a startup Vertical Software Provider where she was instrumental in developing business and product strategy for hosted applications and services. Previous to AristaSoft, Fox was Chief Information Officer at ReadRite Corporation in their highest growth phase. Fox was also a Vice President, Professional Service Group at CompuCom Systems Inc. Previous to CompuCom, Fox was with Safeguard Business Systems where she managed IT & the software development and deployment strategy for the 700,000 customers of Safeguard Business Systems.
Fox is a graduate of Canada's premier Computer Science educational institution, Waterloo University. In addition, she is a co-author of CIO Wisdom: Best Practices from Silicon Valley.
Robert A. Fuire (Bob)

Robert Fuire currently does private consulting with a focus on IT Sourcing and Contract Negotiations. Previously, Fuire was Vice President, Corporate Sourcing at Cingular Wireless. Prior to that he was a Director at Merrill Lynch where he drove mission critical initiatives within the Technology group. Before Merrill Lynch, Fuire was a director at Deutsche Bank where he led the Global Procurement organization for all technology acquisitions with responsibility for financial control, operations, strategic planning and technology sourcing. He was also Chief Operating Officer of International Technology Business Operations for Morgan Stanley; coverage included Aggressive Sourcing and Business Operations for a 1,400 plus employee organization.
Fuire's background includes a variety of senior management roles ranging from marketing to sales in the technology and software business sectors. He has a BS in Business Administration from Pacific Western University.
Don Haderle
CIO Advisory Board
Don Haderle, a pioneer in relational database and information management technology, is an independent consultant primarily for venture capitalists. He worked for IBM in R&D from 1968 to 2005 and has over 50 patents and disclosures. Haderle was the technology leader for IBM's relational database, DB2, which debuted in the 1980s and is still in use in many Global 2000 corporations today.
From 1992 to 2005, Haderle was Vice President and CTO (Chief Technology Officer) for IBM's Information Management business, which encompasses database and content management systems. During this period he led technology for databases on open systems, a federated information infrastructure, content management, spatial systems, and other advances in the IBM portfolio, growing a multi-billion dollar business.
Haderle was appointed IBM Fellow, IBM's most prestigious position for technologists in 1989. In 2000, he was appointed ACM (Association Computing Machinery) Fellow in recognition of his impact on database technology. In addition, Haderle is currently a member of the ANTs and Interlace technical advisory boards. Haderle is a graduate of UC Berkeley, with a BA in Economics 1967.
Christopher T. Hjelm (Chris)
Christopher T. Hjelm is chief information officer for The Kroger Co. and has overall responsibility for management information systems, office services, aviation and building management. Previously, Hjelm was chief technology officer for Orbitz, Inc. and lead the company's technology strategies, engineering, site architecture and operations. He was responsible for all aspects of technology, ensuring that Orbitz continued its industry-leading role in providing the lowest cost and most consumer-friendly technology platform in online travel.
Prior to Orbitz, Hjelm was Senior Vice President of Technology at eBay Inc., with responsibility for all aspects of the company's technology strategy and execution. There he oversaw product development, site operations, architecture, information security and the technology that provided effective business operations for eBay's community of users and employees. Hjelm has also held broad operating, software development and technology roles as Executive Vice President, Broadband Network Services for Excite@Home and as Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer for Zoho Corporation, a business-to-business marketplace serving the hospitality industry. His career also includes 13+ years with Federal Express Corporation where he served the last 2 years as Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer. Hjelm holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Information Systems from Colorado State University.
John H. Keast
John H. Keast has over 25 years of corporate CIO experience leading IT organizations' support for the business, and commercial experiences managing a business unit/P&L, where IT is the business. He is currently the Founder, President and CEO of VentureAxis, Inc.
VentureAxis provides IT companies with a strategic and cost-effective approach to delivering sales, services and support under a "private label" model. VentureAxis also assists IT companies with their Software-as-a-Service strategy and implementation, and provides CIOs with IT strategy and architecture consulting services. Prior to VentureAxis, Keast was Chief Operating Officer at SEEC, Inc. Before SEEC, Inc., he co-founded Tasavo, a company that developed clearing and settlement systems for B2B eCommerce.
Keast has also held executive IT management positions with worldwide responsibilities at companies such as Asera, PG&E Corporation, DHL Worldwide Express and Claris, a subsidiary of Apple Computer and Logica plc. As Corporate CIO of PG&E Corporation, he led the development of this Fortune 100 company's eBusiness strategy and the IT systems for energy deregulation including energy trading. As VP of Technology and Telecommunications at DHL Worldwide Express, Keast successfully headed the development and implementation of DHL's global track and trace network for 220 countries, providing the platform which enables customers to track and trace shipments worldwide.
Keast was selected as a finalist in Information Week's "CIO of the Year", and by Computer World as a "Premier 100 CIO" in 1999.
Peter G. W. Keen
Peter G. W. Keen is chairman of Keen Innovations (formerly known as The International Center for Information Technologies) in Fairfax Station, Va., a senior fellow of Differentis, a European B2B consultancy and a distinguished visiting professor at the University of Delft in the Netherlands. He has served on the faculties of Harvard, MIT, and Stanford, with visiting positions at Wharton, Oxford, Fordham, the London Business School, Stockholm University, and Duke University. In 1994, Keen was profiled by Forbes magazine as the "consultant from Paradise." In 1988, he was named by Information Week as one of the top ten consultants in the information technology field.
A prolific writer, Keen is a contributing columnist for ComputerWorld and the author of many books that have strongly influenced business-technology including Shaping the Future: Business Design Through Information Technology (1991), The Process Edge: Creating Value Where It Counts (1997), The e-Process Edge (2000), From .Com to .Profit (2000).
Keen has worked as a long-term consultant and advisor for companies such as British Airways, British Telecom, Citibank, Glaxo, IBM, MCI Communications, Royal Bank Of Canada, Unilever, HP and many others. He is active on the Advisory Board and Board of Directors of several Internet companies including e-Credit, WebIQ, Xybernaut and newScale.
Herbert W. Perkins III (Bart)
Bart Perkins is the co-founder and Managing Partner of Leverage Partners. With over 25 years experience leading IT efforts for major corporations and consulting firms, Perkins founded Leverage Partners to help CIOs manage their portfolio of technology suppliers. Before Leverage Partners, he was the CIO of Tricon Global Restaurants ($7 billion parent to KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell.) Under his direction, the overall cost of IT was reduced 10% ($13 million/year) by outsourcing commodity services, eliminating redundant systems and activities, and improving IT supplier management.
Previously, Perkins was the CIO of Dole Food Company (the $4 billion fresh fruit and vegetables company. He also has extensive experience in management consulting. Perkins was a Partner at KPMG Peat Marwick (Nolan, Norton & Co.), a Vice President at Technology Solutions Company, and co-founder of The Value Sourcing Group. His consulting career spans diverse industries including hospitality, retail, financial services, high tech, pharmaceutical, and consumer products.
Perkins writes a monthly column on Supplier Management for Computerworld. He has a Master of Computer Science degree from the University of Virginia as well as a B.S. in Mathematics from The College of William and Mary. Perkins is Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Career Resources and serves on the Advisory Boards of Odyssey General Partners.
John Wallace
John Wallace has nearly 30 years of senior IT leadership with leading financial and technology organizations in the United Kingdom. Currently he is an independent advisor and consultant. Recently he was Founder and Executive Chairman of CIO Connect Limited, the premier UK organization addressing the issues and interests of CIOs and senior IT executives.
Prior to this, for eight years, Wallace had overall responsibility for Information Technology across NatWest Group, the leading UK clearing bank. He managed a budget of approximately ?00 million and a staff of 4,000. His group was responsible for supporting National Westminster Bank's 2,500 branch network serving 7 million customers.
Wallace is also a non-executive Director of Lorien PLC, the IT resourcing and market research company, where he is Chairman of the Audit Committee and sits on all other committees. He is also Special Advisor to the CEO of CopperEye Ltd., a data management software company. In addition, Wallace has served as Managing Director of Centrefile Ltd. and Eurocom Data (Holdings) Ltd.; as Chairman of Symtec Solutions Limited, a financial messaging software company; and as a member of IBM Corporation's Customer Advisory Council and the Conference Board's European MIS Council.
Frederick J. Warren (Fred)
Frederick J. Warren co-founded Brentwood Associates in 1972 and initiated the development of the firm's private equity effort in 1984. He was a pioneer in the development of the management buyout, having participated in the structuring of the buyouts of Specialty Brands and A.J. Industries.
Prior to joining Brentwood, Warren served as president of Westland Capital Corporation, a publicly-traded venture capital firm. He holds an engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce. Warren serves as a director of FleetPride Corporation. He has also served on the Board of Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and remains on the Board of Overseers of the Engineering School.
